Outline for ASME A18.1 Vertical Platform Lift Standard
- Rule 2.1.1: Runway Enclosure Provided
- Solid enclosure runway extending from the bottom landing to a height of 42″ above the top landing. Interior surface must be smooth.
- Self closing solid gate at the upper landing, minimum of a 42″ high.
- Running clearance between side guards and unit or enclosure, maintain at 2 to 3″.
- Door at the lower landing, 6′-8″ min.
- Running clearance of 3/8 to 3/4″ on all enter/exit sides.
- Door can be up to 3″ away if 60 to 75° header is provided.
- Side guards with grab rail on platform, 42″ high.
- Emergency stop and alarm on platform controls with key operation.
- Constant pressure controls.
- Gates and doors must be provided with mechanical lock and electric contact.
- Rule 2.1.2: Runway Enclosure Not Provided
- Underside of platform must be guarded on all sides.
- Toe guard must extend at least 3″ above the upper landing by solid or telescoping means.
- Self closing solid gate at the upper landing, minimum of 42″ high.
- Side guards with grab rail on platform, 42″ high.
- Solid vertical fascia extending from the upper landing sill to the level of the lower landing sill.
- Self closing solid gate on platform, 42″ high.
- Lower landing, solid gate or door.
- Emergency stop on platform controls with key operation.
- Constant pressure controls.
- Gates and doors must be provided with mechanical lock and electric contact.
- Rule 2.1.3: Attendant Operated Lifts
- Not permitted under ADA or IBC.
