Industry Standards

There are many industry standards referenced in the codes and regulations for construction, installation and testing of platform lifts.  These standards are not enforceable by themselves.  They must be referenced by legal authorities in their codes or regulations.  Standards are published by private organizations.  As such, the documents are not public domain, are copyright protected and must be purchased from the organization.

There are four primary standards that are referenced in most platform lift codes and regulations.  The ASME A18.1 is the primary driver for defining the functional aspects of the device.  Portions of the ASME A17.5 are referenced to define the electrical control requirements.  Specified sections of the NFPA 70 are called upon to define the electrical power safety requirements for installation.  The ICC/ANSI A117.1 has specific requirements on the physical placement of operator controls and minimum dimensions for entry, floor space and exit.
